About the artist

Raquel Rosa, is a data scientist and PhD student who loves art. She uses artificial intelligence to merge both passions and create beautiful nft collections. Raquel has a master's in computer science with focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence and now is working towards her Ph.D. She has also studied 3D animation and computer arts.

Raquel has a goal to help close the gender gap in AI. 20% of profits from the AI Town collection will be donated to WomenofAI.org, a global nonprofit organization creating women leaders in AI.

Algorithms are trained on massive datasets so it can not only recognize that a dog is a dog but also generate absolutely unique images. To generate the AI Town collection, Raquel used Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), invented in 2014 by Ian Goodfellow. It uses two neural networks where one creates an image and the other decides, based on real-life examples of the target image, how the image compares to the real thing. After giving an accuracy score to the image, it sends that info back to the original neural network. That neural network then learns from the feedback and returns an altered image for the next round of scoring. This process continues until the scoring machine determines if the AI-generated image matches the “control” image. After applying this technique and tunning some parameters the artist then asked AI to create and image of each of the 100 selected cities around the world. The result you can see on OpenSea.
